What is Therapy at Ways of Being?
Counselling and psychotherapy are terms which are often used interchangeably but are both confidential, supportive talking therapies that provide a safe space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. They offer us the opportunity to better understand ourselves, work through challenges, and develop healthier ways of coping with life’s difficulties.
Counselling is often focused on specific issues you may be facing in the present, such as stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties or life transitions with sessions being for a shorter time span helping you to gain clarity, build resilience, and offer you the explorative space to find practical ways to move forward.
Psychotherapy tends to happen over a longer time frame as here you may wish to explore, in greater depth, longer standing struggles or past experiences or patterns that may be affecting your emotional wellbeing and directly impacting your quality of life. This may include exploring past experiences, understanding how they shape your present relationships and behaviours, and working toward lasting emotional change and self-growth.
Both counselling and psychotherapy are collaborative processes. You work alongside a trained therapist who listens without judgement, supports you with compassion, and helps you make sense of your experiences at your own pace.
Therapy can support you throughout the different stages of your life and aid you in processing a wide range of emotional, mental, and life challenges. There is sometimes a misconception that you need to be in crisis to benefit, but many people come to therapy to better understand themselves, improve wellbeing, process difficult or challenging life experiences or when navigating change, to then reduce the risk of entering a crisis point.
who it’s for & my approach
I currently work with adults and young people aged 11 and over, offering therapy sessions in a person-centred, experiential way. My approach is grounded in congruence and the importance of creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgemental space where you can feel heard, respected, and understood. All of your sessions are guided by individual needs, pace, and experiences. Through collaboration, reflection, and age-appropriate therapeutic techniques, I am able to support you to further explore your feelings, develop self-awareness, and build emotional resilience.
Therapy provides a supportive space to talk openly, gain insight, and develop tools that help you cope more effectively and feel more connected to yourself, your inner world, to others and to the world around us.

Yes, we will always work within the limits of confidentiality and with clear boundaries. Confidentiality is explained in an age appropriate way for children and young people with parents being supported throughout the process whilst respecting the child's privacy. This will be explored some more at your first session during the agreement and contracting process.
